Toronto Catholic District School Board

Welcome to Week 6 (Oct 8-12)

Reminders and information for the week:

  • Please join me in welcoming back Joshua Buck who has now been hired for the Science open position!
  • Thanks to Social Committee for organizing our first Staff Social on Oct 11th, Thursday! Come join us!
  • We had a very busy week of excursions last week and we continue to see a lot happening in this week’s calendar.  In this short week, we continue to host Grade 8 visits to those students interested in our school.
  • Photo Re-take Day is on Tuesday (Oct 9th, right back from Thanksgiving Day).  Please remind students to be in full uniform and go to the back Stage area in the cafeteria between 9-11am to get their photo taken if they have missed the original photo day. They will be called down by TA #.
  • Free Dental Screening by Toronto Public Health has been arranged for students who do not have a dentist that they go to on Oct 9-10. While this screening program has been benefiting youth who cannot afford to pay for dental care and also the new comers who do not have a dentist yet, we open this opportunity up to everyone in our school community for voluntary participation. No parents/custodians’ approval is needed. Please encourage your students to participate especially if they do not have a dentist.
  • In Canada, October is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that includes impairments in language, communication skills, and social interactions combined with restricted and repetitive behaviors, interests or activities.[1] Today prevalence rates of ASD in Canada are approximately 1 in 66. Please refer to TCDSB internal website for resources - https://intranet.tcdsb.org/dept/Special_Services/autismTeam/Resources/default.aspx

Kudos for last week:

·        We greatly appreciate the efforts of Dabbagh, Mak, Harnum, and Zabana in organizing our Faith Day Retreat! We all needed the together time.

·        A big thank you to members of the Phys. Ed department who endured the chilly nights and took our students camping the week before and the colleagues for helping with supervising the Drama Department’s trip to Stratford! The trips would have been impossible with your support!

·        You can tell that we are in full Mary Ward mode by the number and variety of trips that are taking teachers and students out of the school.  Thanks to teachers for organizing such great experiential education opportunities and to those of you who remain at the school helping support your colleagues.

·        Thanks also to colleagues who stepped forward to do Grade 8 visits! Your efforts help build our community and keep it strong in numbers!! We appreciate your efforts!

TA Tip(s) of the week

Spot Checks: What are they? When to use one. Spot checks are a great way to call your TA group together. They can be used for multiple reasons:  If you need to find a particular advisee, making sure advisees are following their daily plan, if you have something immediate you need to discus with your TA etc.  To call a spot check, call down to the office and give the secretaries your TA name, number and location of where you want to meet.
