Co-operative education is a perfect opportunity to assist students entering the workforce in making educational and career related decisions.

The purpose is to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to meet success in the Canadian workplace and to obtain valuable work experience to help achieve their career goals.

 


What is co-operative education?

Co-op is a credit program which combines classroom theory with practical work experience in the real world workplace. The program is based on a partnership between the school and industry/business, and involves the participation of students, teachers, employers and in most cases, employee supervisors.

In addition to providing work experience, co-operative education can help students make decisions about their future careers and develop positive attitudes towards themselves and their education. Students also develop new skills and attitudes which will help them pursue a worthwhile career. Exploring different careers and discovering your skills is the key to the future from co-op.

Whatever plans students have for the future, co-op education can help them explore possibilities, gain experiences, and make decisions. Something that provides this level of first-hand experience should not be overlooked.

What is involved in co-op?

Students normally undertake a semestered co-operative education program. They divide their time between school and the workplace, spending at least half the day with the employer. School credits are awarded for successful on-the-job experience after a joint evaluation by the employer and the teacher.
 
For all co-op courses, the students spend the first 2 to 3 weeks in class for the 'preparation for work' unit. After that, the students will spend several  Mondays in school for intergration classes. Students would also attend any scheduled regular classes every day.
 
Students are expected to attend their workplace placement every scheduled day, or to undertake the proper notification process if an absent day is required. Punctuality counts towards their employer's evaluation and conseqently their final term mark. If a student is found to be missing too many work days or is late often, they will be given a warning and after that may be removed from the program.
 
How can I take CO-OP?
 
If you are a student of Michael Power / St. Joseph High School, the co-operative education course is available through MY BLUEPRINT.
 
Students will be contacted by one of the co-op teachers for an interview in APRIL or MAY, to ensure an appropriate program and placement has been selescted.

It is difficult to believe that two years have passed since I was a student partaking in a Co-op placement at the Law Office of Guy Matteazzi. I have just completed my second year of University at York’s Schulich School of Business and would like to take the opportunity to applaud the Co-op program and all that it has to offer…
As I reflect upon the last two years of my rigorous studies in an international program at Schulich, I have realized that my Co-op experience has served as a platform for developing skills, self-confidence and a perspective on life that has provided me with several opportunities to succeed and propel forward toward my professional aspirations. Exploring the dynamics and workings of the legal profession, my duties included things such as preparing numerous Court documents and correspondence, co-coordinating client meetings, conducting legal research and writing letters. Among other things, these responsibilities exposed me to various legal documents and legal terminology that surprised several of my first year classmates and professors. In fact, I surprised myself! I excelled in my first year management course which entailed a detailed unit focused on law and demanded a logic and precise writing style- a valuable asset I acquired through the various letters I had to write as a Co-op student. The professional etiquette and atmosphere I became acquainted with served to aid me in several interviews as employees regarded my co-op experience as an asset and valuable advantage over other candidates.
Beyond legal concepts, terminology and ideas, through Co-op I have attained indispensable knowledge about human interactions, relationships and human nature. Through observing clients undergoing divorce and drug addictions I have been exposed to the harsh realities of life which many students are oblivious too. These realities have shaped my perspective on life and have triggered a realistic vision of the future profession I wish to embark on. Several of my colleagues talk of law school and becoming lawyers in a manner that does not collide with the reality of the profession. Despite its rewards, becoming a lawyer entails long hours and a maze of bureaucracy and daily paper work that I only realized are a part of the job description after my Co-op experience. I’m thankful for my placement as it has allowed me to see the good along with the bad, an invaluable mix, that I believe serves to prevent future disillusionment that often evokes regrets about entering a given profession. If anyone asks me about my Co-op experience, whether it be in an interview situation or in conversation with new found friends. I tell them it is a window into your future.
I have encountered several critics in the last two years, who claim that all lawyers are cheaters and impeccable liars. Having no traces of such traits, they question why I want to enter a profession affiliated with so much corruption? The answer lies in the knowledge they lack and the reality of the profession that Co-op has allowed me to unearth. Mr. Matteazzi, the lawyer with whom I had the privilege of working, is a prime example of a lawyer whose ideologies are rooted in passion for extinguishing fires of chaos and uncertainty. His integrity and passion for law fueled my aspirations of applying to law school and overcoming the grim but widely spread negative connotations associated with the field. In fact, I continue to keep in touch with him via email and I am thankful for the interesting people and contacts I have acquired as a result.
As a former coop student, I recall my teacher, telling us that people often come back and speak of the opportunities Co-op has provided. Well, I would like to become one of those students as I express my gratitude for the ability to explore my career goals and continue to strive for the future vision and path I have discovered through Co-op.
