YMCA Youth Exchange 2014
The Northwest Territories
This year our intermediate girls basketball team participated in a YMCA Youth Exchange program. In April we visited Deliné NWT with Mr. Lazazzera and Ms. O’Brien. It was such an amazing experience. We stayed with our host families and they were all very nice and caring. We did many activities and enjoyed all of them. The best one, though, was probably going out into the bush and learning from the elders how they hunted, trapped, and lived off the land. Learning the Arctic Games was also really fun and the people who taught us were really amazing. We enjoyed ice fishing and riding on snowmobiles for the first time.
Honestly, every part of the trip was wonderful. We created so many friendships. We met new people and learned about the Dené culture. We couldn’t be more thankful for receiving this opportunity to go to the Northwest Territories. We appreciate and thank everyone who has put their time and effort into making this adventure happen for us. Our special thanks go to Mr. Vince Citriniti and the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Department, and to Anne Marie Cassin, Coordinator, the Secretary, and Assessment Programming Teachers of S.B.S.S.S.-South, and our community partners. Without the incredible support of our Superintendent, John Shanahan, our Principal, Jo Nazar, and our Vice Principal, Michael Bethke, this exchange could not have happened.
