PROJECT FRIDA: The Power of Shared Learning
Exhibited at Our Lady of Peace, May 29th, 2013 (OLP GYM)
by: Maria Tavares, Project Creator & Director and Ana Carreiro-Neto, Principal
Project Frida is about expression. It is about acknowledging the learner with us all and releasing that personal power so it can be shared openly. Nowhere is this more important than in the world of thought occupied by our students. This project was all about inspiring students to discover what interests them and enabling educators to glimpse the dynamics of creativity that these young people employ. For it inform us all of the important connections they embrace to enable them to make sense of the ever-evolving world that surrounds them. The project became an incredible vehicle of discovery, as it permitted both students and teachers alike to become shared learners.  And through the lens of Visual Art they were able to share what they discovered in the work they produced. The results speak for themselves.
The staff from Our Lady of Peace contacted Maria Tavares.  A telephone conversation between Maria and Ana Carreiro-Neto (principal) was the start of a beautiful partnership.  Two classes were selected to participate in the project.  They started by visiting the Ontario Art Gallery in December.  In January, Maria and Tanya worked with the students for a total of five days.  The work that has been produced is truly impressive.  All are invited to drop by Our Lady of Peace on Wednesday, May 29th between 10:30 a.m.  and 8 p.m.  The location: our school gymnasium.  Some of our student will be dressing up as Frida and Diego.
