Thank you to all of the parents for attending our interactive and highly anticipated “Kids Have Stress Too” workshop facilitated by Alanna Barr and Jason Bass-Meldrum, both Liaison Public Health Nurse with Toronto Public Health. The workshop allowed for the exploration of “positive,” “tolerable,” and “toxic” stress and further engaged parents to think about ways to help their children feel connected, provide consistency in maintaining a stable environment through healthy eating, and empowering children to develop and practice coping skills. Parents also spent time sharing their stories of their children’s and their own stressors and ways they manage the stress while also exploring the effects of stress on the body, emotions, behavior and the mind. The Stress Triangle consisting of the actions of “Stop,” “Look,” and “Listen” provided a further framework that parents can use in problem solving with their children. Parents were introduced to stretching exercises, such as the “Cloud Push,” the use of Stress/Glitter jars, the importance of naming and communicating feelings by their children, and caveats regarding modelling counter-productive coping strategies by adults in front of children.  Indeed, the night was a practical and significantly meaningful one in which the school community received many excellent resources to continue our goal of elevating overall mental health for all of our stakeholders.
