Young People Called to Witness:  Our Altar Servers' Ministry

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served.” (1 Corinthians 12: 4-5)

As we wrap up yet another year, perhaps it is time for a little reflection over the events that happened during this school year, and also the people who have touched our lives by making these events possible. Our monthly school Mass is one such important event.

Just as St. Paul aptly put it, there are many ways of serving the Lord. Every month, different groups of people work hard to plan the readings, prayers and music to make our Holy Mass a beautiful encounter with God. However, there is a group of children whose service as Altar Servers must also be acknowledged with thanks because without them, our Mass would not run as smoothly as it always does. Our Altar Servers are the pillars of our Mass because they are the first to arrive and the last to leave the church after every Mass. Why? Because their job is to arrive early in church to prepare the sacred vessels, light the candles and make sure that the Priest has everything that he needs for the Mass. At the end of the Mass, our altar servers are the ones who make sure that everything is put away carefully.

The altar servers also have the spiritual responsibility of leading the people of God (us) into the Sanctuary of God at the beginning of the Mass as they, led by the Cross Bearer, proceed into the church with the Priest.

Our altar servers have gone through a long session of serious training with the Church. They have made a strong commitment with the church, not only to serve parish Masses but also school Masses, at all times. Many of our older servers have received medals from the Archbishop to award them for their faithful and excellent service to their parish.

Our altar servers are the role models of a healthy parish-school connection, and most of all, they are the youngest people serving the Lord among all the church ministries. Truly, they are the “salt of the earth.”

Currently we have ten altar servers in our school.
