Green Energy Challenge

On Friday, March 23, student mentors from Mary Ward CSS teamed up with Grade 8 students from Prince of Peace and St. Margeurite Bourgeoys to form teams of 4 to compete in the Green Energy Challenge. This initiative is funded by a grant from the Ministry of Education's Community-Connected Experimental Learning Initiatve

The challenge was to design and construct a working model of a wind turbine, using the supplied materialsThe wind turbine had to be solidly constructed and able to generate a measurable amount of electrical energy (voltage). Kerry Johnston, Professor of Sustainable Energy and Building Technology at Humber College was on hand to help evaluate the projects and speak to the students about the value of pursuing education and training in Green Industries. Thanks to judges Kerry Johnston (Humber College) and Stepan Pruchnicky (Student Success) for their excellent judging of the event, and to Patty Zaroski (EDU) for spending the day engaging with students and for her work with the CCEL grant proposals.

The winning team from St. Marguerite Bourgeoys will go on to compete in the Skills Ontario competition on May 7, 2018 at the Congress Center.
