Toronto Catholic District School Board

School History And Tradition

Santa Maria Catholic School is named in honour of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The name Santa Maria comes from the Latin “Sancta Maria”, or “Holy Mary”, which is part of an ancient prayer, the “Hail Mary.”

A special devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is part of the core of Catholic doctrine and practice. The Bible and the church teach that Jesus would be born only through the cooperation of Mary. Also, at the end of his life, when Jesus was dying on the cross, he asked Mary to be the mother of the apostle John, and in his person, of all humanity.
