Welcome to the
Department of English
"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture.
Just get people to stop reading them."
–Ray Bradbury
The Department of English offers the core English programs
required for graduation at the enriched, academic, applied, essential and ESL
levels. In these courses, the students
focus on a variety of studies: drama, novel study, short fiction, essays,
poetry, media and writing skills. At the senior level, elective courses in
creative writing, media studies, and film studies are offered. At the senior level, students have an
opportunity to write Advanced Placement exams, which allows them to gain
university credits while still in high school.
In all of our courses, students will develop their reading,
writing, critical thinking and oral communication skills. Our goal is that the St. Basil graduates will
have a strong basis in English studies and an appreciation for literature that
they will be able to use throughout their lives.
