Welcome to the
Department of Religious Education
"A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is
never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness
gathers love."
-St. Basil the Great
As an intellectual investigation into an important
dimension of human experience, the examination of religion and philosophy is
intrinsically valuable. It creates a fundamental resource for reflection on the
meaning of life and interpersonal development. It also contributes to preparing
students for a wide range of careers, such as law, medicine, social work,
teaching, local to international politics, and leadership within religious
organizations.
The study of religion and theology is distinguished by the
uniqueness of its subject matter and the diversity of its methods. Its subject
matter is global: the scriptures, institutions, teachings, rituals, devotions and
moral injunctions of all the world’s religious traditions. Furthermore, it
addresses this subject matter with the full range of investigative tools made
available by the various disciplines utilizing historical, scientific and
philosophical methods. As such, religious studies are inherently both
cross-cultural and interdisciplinary.
St. Basil the Great College is proud to provide the best that religious
and philosophical inquiry has to offer.
