TCDSB Teacher Received Reading Award

 
On February 20, 2020 Laura Di Giuseppe, 5th Block teacher at St Benedict and St Dorothy, was awarded the Annual Reading Award at the Reading for the Love of It conference. The award is given to teachers in recognition of exceptional leadership in the area of literacy.
 
The award was presented by superintendent Flora Cifelli and Reading for the Love of it Past President Marisa Liscio (5th Block Mentor).
 
The East York - Scarborough Reading Association  has a long history of recognizing and honouring teachers who demonstrate exceptional leadership in the field of literacy. Candidates must be nominated by at least 2 colleagues, and exhibit a lasting influence on student learning through innovative teaching,  and through the sharing of their literacy expertise.
 
Laura DiGiuseppe from the Toronto Catholic  District School Board, and Janice Chisholm from the Toronto District School Board are two such passionate teachers, held in the highest regard by their esteemed colleagues, appreciative parents, adoring students, and grateful  school communities.
 
Laura, in her role as a 5th Block Reading  Intervention teacher and Literacy Lead Teacher at St. Benedict and St. Dorothy Catholic Schools, is credited with building capacity within the system by hosting classroom visits, always maintaining an open door policy. She seeks opportunities to share her  professional knowledge, resources, strategies, and best practises with staff during “Lunch & Learn” sessions, divisional meetings, and one-on-one discussions. Laura always keeps literacy at the forefront of conversations, especially through cross curricular  connections. She recently delivered a three-part Running Record inservice, demonstrating how to administer and analyze reading assessments, and ways to identify next steps to best support students at all levels.
 
When Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Skills  were determined as critical needs at one of Laura’s schools, she worked collaboratively to prepare levelled bags filled with related activities for classroom use.
 
Last winter, when asked to step in as 5th  Block Mentor for a colleague on short-term leave, Laura recognized this as an opportunity for professional growth, and embraced the role with relentless energy and enthusiasm. She left an indelible impression on those she mentored, and on the team she worked  closely alongside.
 

Laura credits her love of reading to her mom,  a retired school librarian. As a child, Laura was immersed in books, relishing daily visits to the local library. Now, Laura begins each school year by sharing her “Bag Of Books”, a collection of childhood favourites. As she pulls out each title one at a time,  Laura describes the associated memories, and hopes to inspire the same passion in her students.
