New Construction at St. Bernard

Design for New St. Bernard Catholic School

Children Need Space

St. Bernard Catholic School was overwhelmed by a large student population. This North York, Toronto education facility required twelve portable classrooms to meet student needs. Unfortunately, the existing school was situated on a tight urban space and the portables took away much of the existing playground.

ATA conducted a feasibility study analyzing current, intermediate and long-range needs (as student enrolment was predicated to grow even more). After careful review by the Toronto District School Board of ATA’s options the decision was to build the first phase of an eventual new school. The new facility was also designed to accept a third storey. ATA’s signature use of colour on angled planes articulates and enlivens the façade. The result is a progressive, child-friendly vocabulary that offers a framework for future development of the school site.
