Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day

On Friday November 11th the St. Conrad’s community paid tribute to all fallen Canadian soldiers while also reflecting on all the wars and lives lost around the world (past and present) each day due to conflict. The event began with each class bringing their craft poppies to the base of the Canadian flag out in the school yard. They placed them around the base which, after all were placed, spelled out “Lest We Forget”. In addition, at the base of the flag pole, other poppies where placed in the shape of a heart and others covered a wooden cross. A representative from each class also brought down an example of their Remembrance Day craft activity and placed it around the prayer table in the gym.

The school then met in the gym around the prayer table for St. Conrad’s Remembrance Day Assembly. The assembly began with a Liturgy of the Word spoken by students as well as a couple of songs sung by grade 4 and 5 students. The assembly included a moment of silence and the playing of the Rouse and Last Post. Officer Christopher Cook (Stationed at Downsview Park) spoke at the end of the assembly to the students about his role in the Canadian Armed Forces, his service in Afghanistan and the effects of conflict around the world.

He shall judge between the nations,
    and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4)

Though an army encamp against me,
    my heart shall not fear;
though war rise up against me,
    yet I will be confident.
One thing I asked of the LORD,
    that will I seek after:
to live in the house of the LORD
    all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the LORD,
    and to inquire in his temple. (Psalm 27:3-4)
