The Chess Program

The afterschool chess club is run by two professional trainers, Goran Milicevic, a FIDE Master, and Natalia Khoudgarian, an International Woman Master.
Below are a few hi-lights of their experience in playing and coaching chess.
Mr. Milicevic has participated in various tournaments in Canada with great success, as well as coaching many successful Canadian Junior players.  He was  the Metro Toronto Champion in 1994.  Ms. Khoudgarian has been Canada's Woman Chess Champion from 2006 to 2009, and 2011 to 2013.  She has played in the Women's World Championships on 2006 and 2012.  She has also played at the Women's Olympiads.

St. Demetrius students who have enrolled in the sessions meet in the library on Thursdays after school.  The classes are one hour in length from 3:35 to 4:35 pm.  There is a fall session, a winter session, and a spring session.  The cost for each session depends on the number of classes.  The cost is approximately $100 per session.

Students are grouped according to their experience and success in playing chess.  Part of the program involves learning different strategies and skills.  Then students spend time playing each other.  At the end of the 10 lesson session those who have won the most games are recognized.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Board chess competitions that take place throughout the school year.

Students may also be interested in participating in a community based chess club that they have organized since 1996. It is called the "Chess for Children School"  and it is run at Swansea Town Hall.
