Taking part in the Green Acres Outdoor Education Centre’s Chick Hatching Program, the children in Ms. Silva’s and Ms. Casimiro’s ELP kindergarten class have been waiting for the day for their incubated eggs to hatch. Today, Friday, April 11th, 2014 marked that day in which their classroom officially became home to several baby chicks. The experience has been an excellent learning experience in which children and classroom teachers actively took part in learning about stewardship by taking care of the eggs prior to the hatching by establishing a safe temperature of 95 degrees F or 35 degrees C, turning the eggs and providing a fresh supply of food and water after the baby chicks emerged from their shells. Students and staff are thrilled to have these little ones who will eventually be returned as a special breeding flock even if it was for a short while. There is no doubt that this experience has truly been reminder that we can all “Serve in the love of Christ,” which is this year’s theme for Catholic Education Week.
