Scientist in School

Thanks to the generous support of our Parent Council, some classes host presentations/workshops by a company called Scientist in School.  They provide interesting workshops relating to the science curriculum, often utilizing equipment not normally found in an elementary school.

Here is Ms. Keeling's Grade 4's perspective on a recent Scientist in the School Visit:

When the Scientist visited the grade fours, we learned all about pulleys and gears.  We learned about the different types of pulleys which are fixed pulleys and movable pulleys.  We also learned about four types of gears which were the spur gear, bevel gear, worm gear and rack and pinion gear.    We found gears in a bicycle.  We learned how to make a gear train and a pulley system.  Our favourite part of the workshop was when we went into the hallway and we had to try and pull a grade eight student along the floor.  It was hard but when used a rope and stick to create a pulley system, it made it easier.  Pulleys make work easier!  We had a great time learning and can't wait until our next scientist visits!!
