Celebrating Exemplary Practices
2011-2012 Award Winner
For the 13th year, Toronto Catholic District School Board acknowledged innovative projects and programs at TCDSB schools with the Exemplary Practice Awards, which took place on April 23rd. Among this year’s award winners was St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic School for “Grade One Early Intervention Program”
The program was designed as an early intervention strategy to remediate
de-coding difficulties in grade one students.  Designed by grade one teachers Jennifer Brault and Ryan Aunger, (members of the school SIT Team) its goal is to build student confidence in reading ability, encourage the love of reading and increase the de-coding ability of the two lowest groups of readers. This is achieved by one to one leveled read-aloud and rhyming words practice done daily with parent and grandparent volunteers. Parent/grandparent volunteers were given training in September and since then listen to students read aloud one or two books at their comfort level and then do some rhyming words practice. The program is delivered each day for 30 minutes. The concept is to provide extra help for pre level A, level A and B readers in addition to their daily guided reading block.
