Environmental Council

The Environmental Council at St John Paul II is a student-led group that meets on a weekly basis to discuss the environmental issues facing our community and world. It is also a place to examine the ways in which we can improve the school’s and our own individual environmental footprint. Throughout the year, the council organizes events to bring awareness to a variety of causes and issues. On Valentine’s Day, for example, EC sells cacti-grams to raise awareness for water scarcity and how putting thought into our consumption patterns, like buying a plant that requires very little water compared to fresh flowers, can lessen the amount of water we use. In addition, the money is donated to WaterAid Canada, an NGO that helps impoverished communities gain access to clean water and proper hygiene. Through our association with organizations like WaterAid, EC is able to contribute to global solutions rather than solely local ones. It is initiatives like these that have earned us the title of being a certified EcoSchool for 11 years with Gold status for 5 and Platinum for the last 6!

EC welcomes everyone to join our meetings, share their skills and learn new ones. We meet every Monday after school in room 212.
