St. John the Evangelist

  St. John the Evangelist.jpg

Name Meaning:  God is gracious                         Feast Day:  December 27

St. John, the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, was born in Bethesda of Galilee, and was the son of Zebedee and Salome, brother of the Apostle James.  Both brothers were fishermen on Lake Genesareth.  John was called the “beloved disciple.”  He is known because of his life example and teachings of love throughout his gospels.  For St. John, love is light and life and all perfection:  “Beloved, let us love one another because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God” John 4:7.  John spent many years of his life preaching God’s love through Asia Minor.  He is said to have taught Christianity to over 400,000 people.  He spent his last years in Patmos and Ephesos, islands in Greece.  St. John is responsible for writing three Epistles, the fourth Gospel and the book of Revelation.

Shed upon your Church, O Lord, the brightness of your light; that we, being illuminated by the teaching of your Apostle and Evangelist John, may so walk in the light of your truth, that at length we may attain the fullness of eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.
