Toronto Catholic District School Board

About Us

Mission Statement:

At St. John the Evangelist School our mission is to give our students the opportunity to grow to their fullest potential. We will work as a school community to encourage a positive learning environment in the context of a faith based curriculum.  It is all about nurturing student growth, and the need to help our children develop into the people that God wants them to be.  It is about providing a standard that ensures positive growth academically, socially and spiritually.  This has been, and continues to be the ongoing practice at St. John the Evangelist.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students
At St. John the Evangelist School, we focus on four important areas of student  development: Faith Development, Academic Development, Social Development and Extra-Curricular Development.

Faith Development is rooted in the TCDSB Virtues and our Graduate Expectations. Monthly assemblies take place to help all students and staff centre their day in our virtue of the month and daily activities are read out over the PA. As a further way of centring our school in the Virtues program, we have made our school a virtues zone as seen from the minute you walk into our school.

Classes visit St. John the Evangelist Church at least once a  month to take part in school Masses. Father Maderak visits all classes regularly and there are many spiritual events, including Reconciliation, for the entire school.  Gr. 2 and Gr. 8 students also have the opportunity to take part in weekly after school classes as a preparation for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.

In the area of Academic Development, all staff follow the ministry curriculum documents for their grade level. Special Education, ESL are all extra programs offered at our school. All programs provided at St. John the Evangelist school are in accordance with the Ministry of Education and the Toronto Catholic District School Board guidelines.

Additional programs include French as a Second Language (grades 1-8), Vocal music (JK-8).

As part of Social Development, we strive to create a school where all students, staff, parents and visitors to our school feel safe and welcomed. Our ideas are centred in our Student Code of Conduct which has as its central point – Remember that God is inside everyone and live my life at home and school in a way that shows this.  We are involved in many charitable events including food drives, Sharelife, and our very successful Me to We initiative where we strive to raise funds to support water programs in China.

There are many extra-curricular programs offered at St. John the Evangelist School. Students have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities including soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, softball, chess, choir, and  W5H. We have a very active Leadership Team that helps coordinate many of the activities in the school. Our Eco-team has achieved gold certification and our Pay it Forward team is active in school events. We have struck a partnership with Father Henry Carr and have an active anti-bullying team and cheerleading squad.

School Learning Improvement Plan
Staff and students at St. John the Evangelist continue to strive for academic success. Our School Learning Improvement Plan (SLIP) has been shared with our CSPC and our SLIP Goals are posted throughout the school. Learning Goal #3 focuses on bringing our community into the plan by sharing our numeracy learning with parents and other family members. To this end, we have regularly scheduled Student Led Learning Walks (SLLW) during the weeks of Parent-Teacher interviews and Catholic Education Week. We invite you to walk the halls of your school as your child demonstrates his/her understanding of numeracy. This year's SLLWs focus on Problem Solving (one of our SLIP goals) from ELKP to Grade 8.

Ontario EcoSchools
St. John the Evangelist School has been a certified Gold Medal Ontario EcoSchool. We strive to instill responsilbe stewardship of the Earth for all in our school community through Waste Minimization, Energy Conservation, Greening, Curriculum and Environmental Initiatives.

Welcome
We consider ourselves fortunate to have the opportunity to teach the children entrusted in our care and we encourage constant open communication between home, school, and Church. We are privileged and blessed to have Catholic Education for our children.
