St. John Vianney Catholic School community celebrated a windfall of $10,000 from GoodLife Kids Foundation for the school’s “Gymtastic” program.
In addition to tumbling mats, a balance beam and other structures, the students will enjoy the use of a horizontal climbing wall, which was unveiled today. Designed by teacher Patrick DeVuono, the Gymtastic program encourages students to engage in physical activity in a fun and entertaining way with an age-appropriate circuit training program based on gymnastics. This unique program will provide an under-serviced community the opportunity to experience gymnastics and stability training first hand.
Canadian Olympian and Pan Am games ambassador Rosie Cassar, spoke to the students and demonstrated some of her gymnastic moves.
Funds for the grant were generated by the GoodLife Kids Foundation “Spin4Kids” fundraising events. Spin4Kids is an annual eight hour spin-a-thon fundraiser that takes place at more than 80 GoodLife Fitness clubs across Canada.
Chrispin Warner – GoodLife Fitness General Manager, Anne Marie Calhoun and Christine MacIntosh,  Group Exercise Instructors and Spin4Kids Coordinators presented a giant cheque to the school, representing the $10,000 grant.
The Toronto Catholic District School Board’s Partnership Development office assists school staff with the grant applications, which are designated for specific projects to engage students and to improve school facilities and curriculum delivery.  To date, TCDSB schools have received a total of $22,500 this year from the GoodLife Kids Foundation – 2013-2014 recipients include: St. John Vianney = $10k; Our Lady of Guadalupe = $2,500; Transfiguration of Our Lord = $10k.
“GoodLife Kids Foundation is proud to support the ‘Gymtastic’ program at St. John Vianney Catholic School,” said Lisa Burrows, GoodLife Kids Foundation Executive Director. “Patrick DeVuono and his colleagues have developed a fantastic initiative and we’re proud to play a part in providing these students with the opportunity to live a fit and healthy good life.”
“The generosity of the GoodLife Kids Foundation is helping us keep the health and well-being of our students a priority” says TCDSB Director of Education, Angela Gauthier. ““We are grateful to them and all of our partners in education as we work together to create an environment that encourages healthy, active living and learning.”
“Our parents appreciate the engagement of the entire community in the success of our students,” says TCDSB Chair Jo-Ann Davis.  “The Foundation is helping us fulfill our commitment to build equitable, efficient, state-of-the-art learning environments in our schools.”
