English Department
The Ontario English curriculum allows for students to develop the necessary skills they will need in Reading, Writing, Media, and Oral Communication. Here at St. Joseph’s College, we incorporate Canadian literary critic Northrop Frye’s belief that the underlying story of Western literature is a circular hero-quest that narrates the search for personal identity through four stories—romance, tragedy, irony and satire, and comedy. A progressive study of these stories leads all of our students from the summer tales of innocence, through the autumn and winter horrors of death and disappointment, back to the spring-like Garden of Eden where redemption is achieved through the regained innocence of life experience. Frye’s theory is ultimately a Christian vision that seeks to educate the imagination, to help students see the world as it is and to imagine it as they wish it to be.
