French Outside the Classroom

Experiential learning outside the classroom

At St. Joseph’s College School, students are given the opportunity to experience French culture and use French language through diverse excursions. Trips change yearly depending on what is being offered in the city!

In Toronto:

Grade 9 students have gone for breakfast at the Café Crêpe restaurant where they communicate with servers and each other in French and enjoy a traditional French meal. After studying France’s history and Les Miserables, grade 12 students went to see the Mirvish musical when it was in town. Students attended the National Ballet of Canada’s performance of Cinderella after studying fairytales. Students have also visited special art exhibitions at Toronto museums such as the Mystical Landscape Impressionist Art exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Students are given the opportunity to use the French language and immerse themselves in authentic French language settings through numerous other activities such as participating in the annual French Public Speak Contest – Le Concours d’art oratoire where some of our students have encountered great success!

Outside Toronto:

Students taking French in grades 10-12 have an opportunity to participate in a four day, three night excursion to Quebec.

Students are encouraged to participate in week long bilingual programs such as Encounters with Canada (perhaps over March Break!) and summer French programs such as Explore and YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange. French teachers at SJCS are happy to assist with these applications. Please inquire!

We encourage student participation in experiential excursions which enhance and reinforce classroom learning.
