Department of Mathematics
“The essence of
mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated
things simple.” S. Gudder
At
St. Joseph’s we provide encouragement and support to students at all levels
through differentiated instruction and various learning opportunities. We also offer
help through Homework Club and peer tutoring.
Those
interested in mathematics may participate in Math Club meetings, work on
interesting problems, and write numerous math contests.
For
those students who want to challenge themselves and be better prepared for the
rigorous work in mathematics at the postsecondary level, we offer courses
within the CONGREGATED ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM. Our students can start from PRE-ADVANCED
PLACEMENT LEVEL in grade nine and continue to grade 12, when they can take AP
CALCULUS
https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-calculus-ab
and /or AP
STATISTICS
https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse/ap-statistics.
AP Calculus is devoted to topics in differential and integral calculus.
AP
Statistics course, offered in a very few schools, introduces students to the
major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions
from data. This course has four units: exploring data, sampling and experimentation,
anticipating patterns, and statistical inference.
Students
are encouraged to write AP Exams in grade 12, which gives them the opportunity
to compare their mathematical skills with international standards (worldwide,
284 362 students wrote AP Calculus Exam last May).
