Toronto Catholic District School Board

Guidance/Student Success/Co-op/Computers Department

Guidance services include a variety of activities and programs: the majority of which deal with career and educational development and personal counselling. The following is a list of some of the activities and programs provided by the Guidance Department:

TEACHER-ADVISOR SYSTEM
The Teacher-Advisor System will be implemented to monitor students' academic progress. The teacher-advisor will be the key contact for parents and will assist students in developing their educational plan.

CAREER PLANNING
Career Exploration is an ongoing process with emphasis placed on skills, educational requirements, training and career opportunities. Information is available through a career program in a computer lab, the Internet and guest speakers. Students are also encouraged to use the Career Room, which is located in the Guidance Office. Here they have access to information in the form of print material, computer programs, CD ROMS, videos and post secondary calendars.

EDUCATIONAL PLANNING
During the beginning of semester two, students are asked to select their options for the next school year. To help them do this, counsellors visit each home room class to hand out the option sheets and course calendars and to speak about educational planning for high school and for post secondary. To assist students and parents in choosing a high school, Grade 8 Information Night is held each fall.

POST-SECONDARY APPLICATION PROCESS
Visits from college and university representatives are arranged in the fall, and post-secondary information night for parents and students is held in February. Application sessions are held for the students to assist them with decision making and with the completion of applications.

PEER LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES
About 100 peer helpers are involved in Peers Against Drugs, In the Drivers' Seat, Party in the Right Spirti, Grade 9 Orientation and Camp Muskoka, and peer tutoring.

SCHOLARSHIP AND AWARD PLANNING
Potential recipients are encouraged to maintain their standing, develop leadership skills and to make a serious commitment to school and community activities.

COUNSELLING AND REFERRALS
Counsellors offer help to students for any problems or issues that they present. Students may also be referred to other school board personnel or to outside agencies.
