5th Block Visit

On Wednesday, April 4, Members of Education Council were invited to visit 5th Block
classrooms across the Board. 5th Block teachers from Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Lawrence, and St. Marcellus welcomed senior staff into their 5th Block classrooms. The 5th Block Early Reading Intervention program was first piloted in the TCDSB in 1998, and has been adapted for the 2017-2018 school year to include a numeracy focus. The program is intended for students in Grades 1 and 2 who require additional support in reading and are experiencing difficulty developing foundational skills. Currently, there are 44 programs in 42 schools.

5th Block teachers work with small groups of students (max. 6 students per group) for one hour per day for 16 weeks. While in the program, students receive intensive, explicit instruction. Running Record data consistently demonstrate the effectiveness of the program. Results from this fall indicate that Grade 2 students made gains of almost 6 running record levels as a result of the program.
