TCDSB Students Welcome Exchange Partners from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut

Students in grades five to eight from 15 different TCDSB and TDSB schools in the South Etobicoke area partnered with students from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut for a Northern hockey exchange program. The Mimico Canadiens Hockey Association was awarded a grant from Experiences Canada, a charity supported by the government of Canada, which provided the opportunity for 30 students (two teams) to participate in the program.

TCDSB students brought their twinned exchange partner to school with them on Thursday, October 12 for a special assembly at John English Junior Middle School. The assembly offered a special welcome to all of the students from Nunavut to Ontario and focused on honouring our Indigenous peoples and celebrating the diversity of Toronto.
Juno award winning musician and motivational speaker, Susan Aglukark spoke to students about Inuit culture and her childhood and she also performed three original songs.
Director of Education Rory McGuckin participated in the assembly and reflected on his own love of hockey. Director McGuckin reminded students to cherish this unique cultural and social experience for years to come.
Also in attendance were MP Maloney, Councillor Grimes, TCDSB Trustee Ann Andrachuk and Superintendent Doug Yack.
