Toronto Catholic District School Board

History &  Tradition

St_Martin_de_Porres_2_photo.jpgSt. Martin de Porres Catholic School was built in 1962. At that time, the school was surrounded by farm land, residential homes and apartments. The school population was made up of students from a vast geographic area. Students came from Highland Creek region to as far east as the Pickering border. By the late 1960s, the population of St. Martin de Porres began to change. With the expansion of Lawrence Avenue, the number of apartment buildings also grew. To accommodate a growing community, an addition to the school was built in 1968. In that same year, St. Martin de Porres began offering bussing to its students.

Our school is named after St. Martin de Porres, who was known for his work with the poor and needy. In following in the footsteps of St. Martin de Porres, the school has always conducted a fall food drive. Our annual Christmas raffle has always generated funds which have been used to support needy families within the community. In 1987, our school celebrated its 25th anniversary. We look forward to celebrating our golden anniversary in the year 2012.
