2018 Tom Leon Bursary Winners

The Angel Foundation for Learning distributes two bursaries, in the amount of $5,000, annually thanks to a generous donation made by The Leon Family.
On Tuesday, June 26th Connie Leon was present at the Catholic Education Centre to present the awards to this year’s successful recipients, selected from 26 applications, both happen to be from St. Mary Catholic Academy: Krista Elisha Salazar Chavez and Matheus DaSilva.
Krista Elisha has been on the honour roll every single year while in high school, never receiving an overall mark of less than 90%. Her exceptional dedication to her studies did not hold her back from contributing to her school and community, having been an active member in a number of clubs, on planning committees, and campaigns. She has coordinated dress down days to raise money for charities, participated in Street Patrols, helped to organize a Christmas Basket drive, and participated in a 25-hour famine entitled Thinkfast for Development and Peace. Krista Elisha will begin Ryerson’s Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting and Finance program in September 2018.
Matheus DaSilva is an honor roll student who has received certificates for the highest marks in Biology, Physics, Drama and Physical Education. Matheus attributes his school success to "improving his focus, time management and mental fortitude."
Matheus has coordinated leadership weekends at Camp Olympia, acted as Vice-President of his schools Youth Group; he acts as a mentor to younger students, serves at Mass in various roles and supports initiatives like the Development and Peace postcard campaign. He has also helped to organize street patrols and food and care packages for the homeless as well as volunteering for Tokens for Change, which supports youth without shelter. Given all his engagements, it did not come as a surprise to learn that Matheus was nominated and won disciple of the month for the Virtue of Charity.
Congratulations to these two highly motivated, compassionate and committed youth, your hard work in class, and in giving back to your school and community, made you the most deserving of these bursaries. We wish you both all the best in your post-secondary studies!
