Toronto Catholic District School Board

St Mary’s Rebel Girls Take On Shoebox Project

Rebel Girls participated in a final initiative to round out the focus which has been on building a sense of empowerment, opportunity and resilience in our female students.
They have helped our girls and school community recognize a national issue through the white ribbon campaign they ran on for December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, to bring awareness and solidarity.
They later honoured International Women's Day on March 6th, through a collaborative arts exhibition using photography and writing to share and celebrate the accomplishments of the 'Rebel Women' who impact the lives of our students.  This project included raising global and cultural awareness into the challenges and struggles girls and women around the world still face today.
For this last project they focused on local needs and coordinated efforts to create care packages for mothers in Toronto who are impacted by homelessness.  They partnered with the Toronto branch of "The Shoebox Project" to have the girls create, contribute and fund raise towards a number of "shoeboxes" that will help students recognize the value of acts of kindness and further support all the Catholic School Graduate Expectations, but in particular, that of becoming a responsible citizen.  The goal was to have the "shoeboxes" ready for the May 3rd deadline in time for Mother's Day.  These boxes will be provided to women in our own community.
The students were able to put together a total of 14 shoebox gifts. Congratulations to the Rebel Girls and the school community.
