St. Mary CA IB Student is Accepted Into the Prestigious QuARMS Program

Cheyan A. accepted into QuARMS program
Cheyan Athanasiou

Congratulations to  St. Mary International Baccalaureate (IB) student Cheyan Athanasiou, who is one of only 10 high school students to be accepted into the Accelerated Route to Medical School (QuARMS) at Queen’s University!

QuARMS is a prestigious and unique program that allows graduating high school students to apply to Queen's Medical School after only two years of undergraduate study at Queen's, without taking the MCAT. Cheyan proved herself to be an outstanding candidate for the QuARMS program through a lengthy application process, which consisted of a supplementary application, written tests, and panel interviews.

Cheyan is ecstatic to have been accepted: “As an Indigenous person, I'm really proud to be one of the 10 students accepted into the program, and hope to raise awareness about the lack of diversity in the medical field. I hope to one day become a pediatrician, as I love being around kids and being a doctor has always been a dream of mine, due to my interest in the health sciences.”

Throughout her years at SMCA, Cheyan has not only demonstrated great academic ability, but also exceptional leadership skills and commitment to service. As a senior leader of the Grade 9 orientation trip to YMCA Cedar Glen, she helped to plan activities and collaborative games that built community and interpersonal relationships, easing the Grade 9 students’ transition to high school. Cheyan also volunteer tutored Grade 10 students who were preparing to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).

A member of SMCA’s volleyball and basketball teams, Cheyan also found time to volunteer as an assistant basketball coach at her elementary school, teaching basketball drills in addition to teamwork and respect. She has also participated in various SMCA extracurriculars, such as the Eco-club and the Youth group, demonstrating her interest in helping the environment and those in need.

Cheyan's love of learning and curiosity is apparent in the diverse leisure activities she chooses to pursue (taking cooking classes, teaching herself how to play the piano, learning rug making, community gardening, kayaking and paddle boarding.) These qualities will serve her well, and point to a very promising future.

Congratulations, Cheyan! We wish you continued success in your post-secondary studies!
