Admissions Requirements

Students looking over notes together The majority of our students receive entrance to the Choir School in Grade 3. However, students may be accepted into higher grades depending on their musical aptitude, skills and availability of space.

St. Michael's Choir School admission procedure is as follows for potential students entering from Grade 3 to Grade 8:
 
Please note that starting in Grade 5, the program offered is in Extended French.
 

Please Note: Currently there are no spots open in the Grades 5 - 8, September 2018 classes. Successful auditioners for these grades will be placed on our waiting list. Should a spot open in these grades we will go to our wait list. Many thanks for your understanding.

 
Before Your Audition

 

In advance of an in-person audition, all students must provide the following documents:

 

  • A Roman Catholic baptismal certificate for the student or at least one parent
  • A copy of his birth certificate
  • His two most recent report cards
  • A teacher reference form
  • A non-refundable audition fee of $30
  • A reference from music teacher or choir conductor

These documents are required to be submitted electronically a minimum of two weeks prior to the date of
audition. Audition dates will not be confirmed until all documents have been submitted and fees have been paid.
 
 
 

On The Day Of Your Audition

Please arrive at least ten minutes ahead of your scheduled audition time. Students will be seen one-on-one by an auditioner, where they will go through a vocal assessment designed not only to assess a student’s vocal and musical ability, but also their listening skills and teachability.
Below are some grade-specific audition requirements.

 
Grades 3 and 4

For Grade 3 and 4 auditions, students will be asked to:

  • Sing O Canada or a song of their choice
  • Sing back melodies and various vocal exercises led by the teacher
  • Play a piece of their choice on the piano or other instrument (if they are currently studying an instrument)

Grades 5 and up

For Grades 5 and up, students will be asked to:

  • Sing a song of their choice
  • Sing back melodies and various vocal exercises led by the teacher
  • Sight sing a very short melody
Ideally, candidates for grades 5 and up are in a choir and/or currently studying an instrument. Students should be prepared to play a piece on their chosen instrument.
 

 After Your Audition

 

You will receive an email in the week following your son’s audition letting you know his results. If auditioners think your son is a good candidate for St. Michael’s Choir School, you will be invited to make an appointment for an academic assessment. This normally takes place two weeks after the vocal audition.

 

Following academic assessments, offers of admission will be sent out by email in May. Offer emails are followed by an admissions package sent to your home by mail. Your son’s place at the school will be held pending payment of a choral program fee deposit. Details on the amount and due date for the deposit will be included in the admissions package. If you have not submitted your deposit by the due date, your son may be moved on to a waiting list.

 
Admissions packages will include:

  •  A welcome letter

  • An invitation to our annual welcome Mass for new families
  • An invitation to our annual new families summer BBQ
  • Information about your son’s uniform
  • Information about the typical schedule for your son’s grade
  • A look at the year ahead including special events, concerts, tours and Mass schedules
  • A letter from his conductor telling you what to expect in choral during the year
  • For grades 5 and up, detailed information about the coming year’s tour

Secondary Admission Requirements

 

Extended French (Secondary) Program 

The secondary Extended French Program, a continuation of the elementary Extended French Program (Bilingual Program), is offered at St. Michael’s Choir School. Courses offered include four French language and literature courses, one course each in Canadian History and Geography, as well as World Religions. It should be noted that upon graduation, students who have completed a minimum of seven French courses, earn the Extended French Certificate of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. At this point, they are considered to be functionally fluent in French.

Students auditioning at the secondary level will be expected to have at least some experience on an instrument, preferably piano, and a strong French background.
