​St. Michael's Choir School Scholarships

 

The following is a list of Scholarships that the school has offered in the past and presents to students at the Closing Ceremonies in June. 

THE MONSIGNOR JOHN E. RONAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 This Scholarship is awarded to a student in Grade 7 or 8 for excellence as a Cathedral Chorister.  It has a value of $1,500.00 toward the 2010/11 tuition fee.

 

THE GIFT OF MONSIGNOR T. BARRETT ARMSTRONG

Monsignor Armstrong, through his time in the school, was selfless, supportive, generous in spirit and action, unswerving in faith, foregoing all glory. The award is given to a student who is faithful as a chorister, diligent in his studies, and Christ-like towards others. It has a value of $500.00 towards the annual tuition fee.
 

THE KATHLEEN MANN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Ms. Kathleen Mann was the conductor of the Junior Choir and advisor at the choir school from 1937 until 1999. To honour her outstanding dedication and commitment to the choral program, the Kathleen Mann award of $500 for musical excellence is awarded to a Junior Choir student who strives for musical excellence, sings with a sense of artistry and demonstrates leadership and commitment to the ensemble and the St. Michael’s Choir School Community.

 

THE MONSIGNOR ALLEN ARBOUR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

This award has been established in memory of Monsignor Allen Arbour who was a beloved faculty member of St. Michael’s Choir School. Not one to bask in the limelight, Fr. Arbour dedicated himself to helping SMCS students in their faith formation and academics. A former guidance counsellor and mentor to many, students and staff members alike turned to Fr. Arbour for advice and guidance. His devotion to his faith, compassion for others and dedication to St. Michael’s Choir School is to be valued and remembered.
 
This award is given to a returning student who is faith-filled, in good academic standing, with an exceptional record of committed service to the Music programme. This scholarship has a value of $500 and will be directed towards the annual tuition fee.
 

BISHOP POWER MEMEORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who has made a significant contribution to the Choral program, both as a chorister and in other roles of musical leadership. This scholarship has a value of $500.

 

POPE PIUS X MOTU PROPRIO LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

 

Pope Pius X’s Motu Proprio on Sacred Music was the inspiration for Monsignor Ronan to establish St. Michael’s Choir School. This document charged the Church to support schools of sacred music, and to provide instruction to church musicians in the true principles of sacred art. 

 

 
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating student who is going on to further study music, and has shown significant leadership in the Choral program.   This scholarship has a value of $500.
 
 
 ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
 
This award is awarded to a student in grades 3-12 who has show consistent dedication to the choral programme and a generour school spirit throughout the academic year.  The award has a value of $1,000.00
 
 

HAROLD L ARMSTRONG SCHOLARSHIP

 

This scholarship is awarded from the late Ethel Armstrong who directed that the scholarship be in memory of her brother who was a charter member of the Choir School staff and organist of St. Michael's Cathedral for over 30 years. It is awarded annually to a student for excellence in instrumental and theoretical music, provided they be faithful organ students and choristers.  The amount of the Scholarship will be the annual income divided equally among the students.  This year the students will each receive $450.00 towards the annual music tuition fee.  

 

 

ELVIRA DE MONTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Mrs. De Monte served as a Trustee on the Separate School Board for twenty-three years. She strongly believed in Catholic Education and worked hard to establish schools throughout Metropolitan Toronto to service Catholic families.  She was instrumental in the development of Cardinal Carter School of the Arts because she understood that a school that combines artistic talents and academic excellence would further enhance the spirit of the student. She believed in enhancing ones growth through music and drama and asked, before she passed away from Cancer, that a child from St. Michael's Choir School also receive a scholarship to continue in the traditions of the school. 
 
(This scholarship shall be awarded to grade 4, 5, or 6 students of St. Michael’s Choir School who are in good academic standing, with a consistent record of faithful, loyal and committed service to the Cathedral and to the music program.)
 

SIR LOUIS H. PARSONS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded to a graduating student from St. Michael’s Choir School who best exemplifies the qualities of humility and service to others while demonstrating the greatest potential for future leadership. This scholarship has a value of $1,000.00

 

THE SEAN GARROW MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by the Garrow family and friends in 1995.  It honours the memory of Sean Garrow, son, chorister and athlete, who died tragically on August 27th, 1994.
 
In his twelve short years of life, Sean gave much love and pleasure to those around him.  His personality had an infectious quality of kindness and laughter that drew many people to him young and old.  Sean was an academically gifted child, musically talented, and a natural athlete.
 
This award will be made to a student who is returning to the Choir School in the following year, and will recognize his well-rounded excellence in every aspect of Choir School life, with particular emphasis on enthusiastic participation in school sports and athletics.  This year the award has a value of $1,000.00 toward the annual Music School fees.
 

 THE JOAN HOPPERTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This Scholarship is awarded annually by St. Michael’s Choir School to the student in Grade 8 who best achieves academic excellence.  It has a value of $1,500.00 toward the Grade 9 tuition fee.
   

THE KEN KERRIGAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

The Ken Kerrigan Memorial Scholarship is presented to the High School student who has made the most of his talents academically and musically, and who has also made an important contribution to the mission of the school.  It is presented by the graduating class of 1977 in honour of their classmate Ken who died tragically in an accident in 1982. On the 40th anniversary of their graduation, the Class of ‘77 increased the value of this scholarship from $300 to $1,000.                                                               
 

THE AMBROŻY AND DYONIZA CICHOCKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN SACRED MUSIC

Established in memory of Ambrozy and Dyoniza Cichocki, long-time supporters of St. Michael's Choir School, by their sons Dr. Wladyslaw Cichocki and Dr. Jerzy Cichocki (class of 1977).  The scholarship is awarded to a high school student who demonstrates scholastic attainment and exceptional progress in the study of Sacred Music. It has a value of $1000.00.
 

THE ANDREW BEZJAK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship, which was established by the parents of the 2003 graduating class in honour of their classmate who died suddenly in February of 2003, is awarded to the graduating valedictorian. The award has a value of $500.00

 

DOMNIC MELINO “A MAN FOR OTHERS AWARD"

This award will be given to a graduating student who best exemplifies the attributes that Mr. Melino demonstrated while he was the principal from 2001- 2010. These qualities include a Christian attitude toward everyone, dedication to hard work, team building, and a fair, balanced approach with staff and student body.   This award has a value of $500.00. 

 

THE CORRADO FALCITELLI MEMORIAL AWARD

 

This award has been established by the Falcitelli family in honour of Corrado Falcitelli, SMCS 1991. His perseverance during difficult times was a testament to his resilience and strong character. A dedicated alumnus of SMCS, Corrado was very proud of his post-secondary accomplishments. He was deemed a leader by his peers, and was a friend to everyone.
  
This award is given to a graduating student who embodies all aspects of Choir School life: Academics, Music, and student involvement, with an emphasis on character, community engagement, and academics.  This award has a value of $1000.
 
 

THE JOHN ARAB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 

John  Arab "one of the finest tenor voices in Canada" joined St. Michael's Choir School in 1954.  John taught voice at the Choir School and was the vocal coach of the Tenor and Bass Choir.  He exuded warmth and gentleness and a sense of humour.  This scholarship is awarded to the vocal student who has consistently demonstrated a faithful commitment to develop his talents/gifts within the context of Choir School values and ideals.  the ward has a value of $400.00.
