Tenebrae Service 2021

The St. Michael's Choir School Alumni Association, in cooperation with St. Michael’s Choir School and the Archdiocese of Toronto, have produced a video of Msgr. Ronan’s Tenebrae for Holy Week 2021 premiering Monday, March 29th at 7PM on the St. Michael's Choir School YouTube Channel.

Tenebrae is a service observed during Holy Week commemorating the sufferings and death of Christ. There are several musical renderings of this period in the life of Christ, but none as masterful as the 1979 work by Msgr. John Edward Ronan (1894-1962), founder of St. Michaels Choir School.

'Tenebrae Responsories', under the artistic direction of Josh Tamayo (SMCS Class of 2003), highlights the 1985 recording by St. Michael’s Choir School, conducted by Harry Hodson (SMCS Class of 1960 and former Principal and Director). This music is combined with stunning new imagery from St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica and features His Eminence Cardinal Thomas Collins along with a host of our accomplished alumni, including Jim Codrington (SMCS Class of 1982) and Douglas Tranquada (SMCS Class of 1974).
