Dear Parents/Guardians,

This letter is to inform you on some planned rehabilitation work to the existing railway bridge near our school, which will impact the pedestrian and vehicular traffic near the school.

The existing railway bridge located at 405 Rogers Road, just west of St. Nicholas of Bari Catholic School, was constructed in 1926 and is currently owned by Metrolinx. The existing bridge is a single span through plate girder design that is wide enough to support two tracks though it is currently supporting only one track on the west side of the bridge. Metrolinx will be adding a second track to the Barrie line soon, but the existing bridge requires repair work to ensure its continued safe operation. Metrolinx has contracted SEMA Railway Structures Inc. of Toronto to complete this bridge rehabilitation project.

The scope of the bridge rehabilitation includes repairs to the two concrete abutments, replacing unsound concrete, sealing of cracks, sealing the concrete against moisture penetration, painting the bridge in its entirety, removing the existing railway track and ballast, installing new railway tracks and ballasts, improving the drainage of the structure, and supplying and installing new trainman walkways and railings at track level.

During this construction project, lane widths on Rogers Road will be tighter, the sidewalk, bike lanes, and parking spaces on the south side of Rogers Road in front of the school will be closed, but the sidewalk on the north side of Rogers Road in front of the school and the vehicular entrance to St. Nicholas of Bari Catholic School will remain open.  This situation will dramatically increase the already busy student drop off and pick up times at the school Kiss & Ride.  The safety of everyone in our community is always our top priority.  We ask for everyone to give themselves extra time to get children to and from school and to exercise extra caution and patience.

Kindly note that the SEMA Railway Structure Inc. of Toronto crew works daily 07:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday.  Sometimes they will need to work weekends or nights to work around train movements.  On the weekend of September 20th, from 18:00 September 20th to 04:00 September 23rd, SEMA will be working around the clock to safely remove and replace the track and carry out repairs to the top of the concrete deck.

Barring any unforeseen issues, the Metrolinx bridge rehabilitation project should be completed by December 2019.

Thank you, in advance, for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this bridge rehabilitation project.

Sincerely,
Anna Arciero                              Maggie Duarte
