Toronto Catholic District School Board

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Symposium for Elementary School
"We All Belong"

The Toronto Catholic District School Board wants its school communities to spread one message when it comes to the prevention of bullying behavior:  “We All belong.” Representatives from its 171 elementary schools participated in the third annual Bullying Awareness and Prevention Symposium on November 20th. The event brought together the key players in helping to address this global epidemic:  parents, students, staff and police.

Setting the tone for the day was a one-hour interactive and impactful presentation with a creative arts team from L’Arche Sol Express.   The team shares the message of building community by celebrating our differences and unique gifts.

Student Ireland Melchior from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School shared her personal strategy. Ireland reads letters from fellow students daily over the school’s Public Address system, offering her own advice to encourage a sense of belonging and inclusion among the students.

Last year’s “Feathers Against Bullying” initiative made quite an impression on student Stephanie Clark when she attended Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic School.  Since then, she has made it her mission at Bishop Allen Academy to reach out to those in need, not just within her community, but around the world.

St. Fidelis Catholic School parents Luisa Lauriola and Valerie Lanni introduced a new resource kit entitled “We All Belong”. They will lead fellow parents, school staff and students in discussions on how they can to support students who have been affected by bullying.

Detective McBryde from Toronto Police Services brought the police perspective on the issue, offering advice as to how the police can assist a community.  In the afternoon, participants will develop school plans. The Father Henry Carr C.S.S. Drum Line and Dance Team performed throughout the day.
