Toronto Catholic District School Board

St. Richard Catholic School Vegetable Garden

Growing Green at St. Richard

St. Richard is proud to launch its newly built food garden, consisting of sixteen raised beds.  Last year, we started growing veggies in a corner of the field, and thanks to funding from TD Friends of the Environment and from Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds, we were able to install the raised beds in the late fall.
This year, we are growing a variety of heritage vegetables, including, corn, beans, tomatoes, broccoli, zucchini, spinach, carrots, onions, peppers, cucumbers and beets.  The seeds were started indoors in early April and were planted outdoors on May 23.  Some of this produce will be donated to the local food bank to help families in need.  This garden provides experiential learning opportunities for the students in growing produce, caring for the soil and maintaining a garden.  This venture has been a collaborative effort between staff, students and neighbours, who will help us with summer maintenance of the garden. We are very excited to watch our garden grow this season!

St. Richard gratefully acknowledges the support given by Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds in helping to implement the food garden and by FoodShare, a non-profit agency who provided expertise and resources to us over the past year.
