WHERE Challenge

WHERE Challenge winner

The Grade 5 gifted students of Mrs Wong-Tinson’s class at St Rose of Lima Gifted Withdrawal Centre participated in the 2018/2019 WHERE Challenge.  The Challenge is a national contest endorsed by the Canadian Earth sciences community that asks students aged 9 - 14 years to discover the answers to these questions: What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on Earth does it come from? WHERE stands for the places where Earth scientists work: Water, Hazards, Energy, Resources, and Environment.

Congratulations to Alexa Calderon who won for Best Creative in the Graphic Art category!  She chose to investigate what non-renewable resources make up a soda can.  To showcase her research she created an original hand-drawn comic strip entitled, “Mom! Dad! Where do soda cans come from?!”  Her characters took us on a journey from under the Earth to the factory then finally into stores.
When asked about her experience Alexa said, “The WHERE Challenge was fun because I could research about  the non-renewable resources that make up the soda can.  I also enjoyed creating and illustrating the comic. The most important thing I learned is that we need to be more careful of what we are using so that it doesn’t harm the environment.”
