Did you know that according to Statistics Canada 2011:
  • Only seven percent of elementary school aged children get at least 60 minutes of heart pumping physical activity at least six days a week
  • Boys and girls are inactive over eight hours a day
  • Inactive lifestyles put children at risk for preventable health problems including Type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease
Exercise that gets your heart rate pumping has many benefits to your health.  Being active for at least 60 minutes daily can help children:
  • Improve their health and do better in school
  • Improve their fitness, grow stronger and maintain healthy body weight
  • Learn new skills and improve their self-confidence
  • Remember: every step counts.  Walk or ride to school, have active play time or play sports all together as a family

The staff and students of Sts. Cosmas and Damian are preparing for our Healthy Active Living community event that will take place at 5:30pm on Tuesday, May 8th, 2012, at Marshall McLuhan Catholic High School (1107 Avenue Rd. Toronto, M5N 3B1). This event is reflective of a healthy and active lifestyle.  All classes will be performing a form of dance or exercise that involves audience interaction and participation.  We would like to remind parents to dress casually and comfortably, so that full participation in this fun and entertaining event is possible.

To complement the healthy active living theme, a nutrition workshop by LEARN EAT GROW will be presented to parents and students prior to the start of the interactive presentation.  We request that all parents who would like to participate arrive by 5pm to benefit from the full workshop.
