Singer, actor, and motivational speaker Wes "Maestro" Williams visited St. Simon school on April 18th to speak with the students about motivation and developing resilience. Students learned about the steps they need to take to achieve their goals and overcome challenges. 












  









Autism Awareness Presentation

 

On Friday April 1st, the students at St. Simon participated in a student lead Autism Awareness Assembly. Part of this assembly was for the students to understand and learn about Autism. They also participated in the Board wide Autism Awareness Dance.

Student work was displayed in the school gym during the SLLW. All grades were represented through the lens of the Mathematics and Visual Art. The strand of Geometry was highlighted. The goal of a Learning Walk is for parents and students to understand the trajectory of learning that occurs in the same subject area or strand from Kindergarten to Gr. 8.

Additional Information About Publicly Funded Catholic Schools

 

Your support is needed to speak up for Catholic education. Once again the government of Ontario has launched the “Talk Ontario” website to gather ideas from Ontarians on the priorities they think should be addressed in the upcoming provincial budget.  The site was launched a few weeks ago and at present  the “ideas” generating some of the most feedback and getting the attention of the media, are the ideas pushing for the amalgamation of school boards and/or the elimination of publicly funded Catholic schools. You can also do a search on the site for “Catholic education” to bring up various posts related to this topic.

  

 

We encourage our community to speak up in opposition to such ideas. Following is a link to one of the more “popular” idea threads calling for the amalgamation of Ontario’s education system – we encourage you to communicate your opposition to any move in this direction:

Some Changes for the 2015-2016 School Year

 

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

 
Another successful year at St. Simon has come to an end and we want to take a moment to wish everyone a happy and safe summer.
 
A couple of reminders to for the upcoming academic year 2015-2016:
 
Our  school lunch hour will remain the same and run from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., but the students’ eating time will change to the end of the lunch hour.  Presently they have lunch from 11:15 to 11:35 a.m.  which is only 47 minutes after their morning recess snack, by changing their eating time to 11:55 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. we will be balancing their food consumption during the day and create a better balanced school day.
 
Secondly as classes for the upcoming year are being created, a reminder that all classes are tentative as there may be a change in school population over the summer months which will have a direct impact on the classes.

Learning doesn’t have to stop during the summer months!
 
Beginning June 29th, TCDSB will provide weekly on-line Literacy, Numeracy and Pathways learning activities for all TCDSB students K-12!
For younger students in Grades K-6 TCDSB Summer Playground offers:
·         learning activities and resources that reflect the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations and  the language and mathematics curriculum
·         information for parents and students about events and activities that are happening across local Toronto neighbourhoods
·         a variety of ways for students to inquire and learn through At Home, Using Technology, and In the Community activities.
For our older students in Grades 7-12, TCDSB My Summer, My City will offer a wide variety of literacy, numeracy and Pathways activities for students to explore their interests and their city through reading, writing and online learning opportunities.
New this year is the Parents’ Corner that will support parents as they help their children continue their learning throughout the summer months.
Students and parents can visit TCDSB Summer Playground and TCDSB My City, My Summer each week and can follow our tweets using the hashtags #summerplayground and #mysummermycity.

CONFIRMATION AGE HAS CHANGED

 

From St. Jude’s Church:
Please note that as of this year, the age of Confirmation has changed to correspond to the age of those in Grade 7. The Archdiocese has made this change official and we invite parents with children in this grade to stay tuned with parish announcements (church bulletin) regarding procedures for this coming year. It is important to know that for 2016, we will have both grade 8 and grade 7 students celebrating Confirmation during the same year. We are awaiting instructions from the Archdiocese regarding how to proceed and how Confirmations are to be planned given that we will have double the number only this year. Parents should be contacting the Church office for any questions, not the school or the teachers, and be sure to get firsthand information. The schools will only refer you to us in order to discuss any sacraments for your child. Thank you.

Message from the TCDSB to Parents

 

Hello Everyone,

 

 
We thank all the parents and CSACs who have already taken the time to provide feedback to us about the budget through our online survey, numerous committee meetings, and our virtual Town Hall. 
Your input is invaluable to the Board as it moves forward this spring to begin discussions, and make preliminary decisions, around potential reductions in an effort to balance its budget.
 
We would ask you to help us get the word out to all parents that we want to hear from as many as possible.
It only takes a few minutes to complete, and the feedback is anonymous.
 
Please note also that there will be a second round of consultations starting in late March/early April once the Board considers the input received during this first stage of consultation.
 
As always, the involvement and support of our parent communities is greatly appreciated.

The choir from Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School will also be joining us for this celebration.

Winter is Here!

The winter weather has begun!

Please ensure that students are prepared to be outside during snowy and cold weather. Hats, mitts or gloves, boots and snow pants are also recommended. Students should also have a pair of indoor shoes to wear in the building. 

Packing an extra pair of socks or gloves is also a great idea.

From Monday November 10th- Friday November 14th the school will be hosting a Book Fair in the Library. The Book Fair will be open to parents during lunch and after school. The students will visit the Book Fair throughout the week.

OCTOBER FOOD DRIVE


St  Simon school is invited to participate in St. Jude's Parish October Food Drive to help those in need in our community.  Beginning on October 1st through to October 31st, we gladly welcome daily donations of non-perishable food items. These items will be collected by your child’s teacher and delivered to our parish, St. Jude’s Church. Our “Me to We” student group will be helping to gather donated items and organize this event.  Thank you.

On Friday September 5th, Mr. Boccia and Mr. Howlett participated in the ALS ice bucket challenge. They were challenged by Mr. Bria, the Principal from St. Phillip Neri.

Morning Recess: 10:12am -10:27am

MULTI-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN REVIEW MEETING
  MYSP Report Card
Since its approval by the Board of Trustees on April 4, 2012, our Multi Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) has guided the activities of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. To help us continue the implementation of the MYSP, monitor its success and to support efforts to develop goals for our next MYSP, all members of our community are being invited to complete a MYSP Report Card.  
 
Feedback from this community-wide engagement process will be compiled into a single report. Submissions are confidential and will not be attributed to any one school, group, or individual.  Parents with students in a TCDSB school were invited to fill out their report cards in January.
 
As an active and important member of the TCDSB, we are pleased to extend this invitation for your personal participation. Parents who may not have already taken advantage of the opportunity  to provide input are also encouraged to do so at this time.  
 
The link has been programmed to receive responses from March 19 to April 11, 2014. 
 
Four Town Hall meetings will be held to facilitate further staff, student,  parental and community engagement on Monday, March 31st and Tuesday, April 1st.

 On Wednesday, April 2nd, our students gathered in front of the school to raise the flag for autism awareness. Each day, our students made public service announcements educating our students on autism. We also welcomed a guest speaker into our junior division and she spoke of how to better know and understand the wide spectrum of autism.

FAMILY LITERACY DAY


January 27th is Family Literacy Day.  Created by ABC Literacy Life Canada, this nation-wide initiative raises awareness of the importance of families reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities. The ABC Life Literacy website http://abclifeliteracy.ca/ lists and describes various family literacy events occurring throughout Toronto.  Suggestions for easy day-to-day literacy activities are outlined in the Fifteen Minutes of Fun list.  Families can take advantage of the various online activities and download family resources. The TCDSB resource Supporting Parent Engagement in Literacy (TCDSB secure site) is a document has been designed to support parent engagement in literacy.  It can be accessed by TCDSB schools through the intranet in the Literacy Resources page.

EQAO Assessments:  The Power of Good Information
 
Every year, Ontario students in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10 write province-wide tests.  These assessments provide an objective indication of how well students are developing the reading, writing and math skills defined in the Ontario Curriculum.  Since results are available for every student, provincial test data have become a key ingredient in helping schools, school boards and the province identify students’ strengths and target areas where attention and resources are needed. Parents are given an indication of how well their child is learning in relation to the provincial standard. This presentation delivered by a principal from EQAO’s School Support and Outreach team will give parents an opportunity to gain an understanding of the EQAO assessments.
 
The presentation includes lots of information about the assessments and what parents can do to support their children.  It also dispels some of the myths about EQAO.  One of the activities includes looking at previous years' assessment booklets, looking at how a writing item is scored, and doing a multiple choice question.

CHRISTMAS OUTREACH PROGRAM
 
 
St. Simon Catholic School will once again be making Christmas Baskets to donate to families in need. The baskets will be picked up by St. Jude’s Church on Friday, December 13th, so they will be ready for the families on Christmas morning. We will be giving the children more information in the next week, and we thank you in advance for your support during this important time.

ST. JUDE GALA
 
YOU ARE INVITED….
St Jude’s Parish is excited to be celebrating its 4th annual “Renewing our Hope in Saint Jude” Gala on Friday, October 25th 2013 at the Paramount Conference and Event Venue. We would like to invite you to come and celebrate this special event with us!
This yearly fundraiser would not be a success without the help and support of our community. Thank you!
 
Tickets are now available for sale:
-          after all weekend masses, or
-          at the parish office during the week.
 
Bring a mask! This year’s theme for the Gala is a masquerade. Guests are encouraged to wear a mask (optional). The best mask + costume will get a prize.

NEIGHBOURHOOD COMMUNITY POLICE LIAISON MEETING

St. Simon will be hosting a community meeting, in the gym, on Monday, May 27th at 7:00 p.m.
 
Police officers from 31 Division will be present to address local policing concerns. This will give community members an opportunity to engage in an open dialogue with their community police. Walk So Kids Can Talk 
 This community walk will take place on Sunday, May 5th. Stay tuned for more information, to be sent home with students. Money raised will benefit the Kids Help Phone.   www.kidshelpphone.ca
 
In support of this worthy cause, we will have a Kids Help Phone (KHP) civies day on Friday, May 3. Students can dress in the KHP colours (orange, blue and green) for a dollar. They can also purchase a Kids Help Phone bracelet for $2.00.

Please Join Us for the Journey of the Witness to Faith Cross
 
YOU ARE INVITED TO WITNESS WITH US
 
On Friday, April 19, 2013, St. Simon will receive the cross from St. Gerard Majella School. There will be a mass to celebrate this at 10:00 in our school gym. 
On Monday, April 22, 2013, St. Simon’s staff and students will process up to St. Basil the Great High School and deliver the cross to that school. The procession will begin at 9:00, at the school.
PLEASE NOTE: ON BOTH DAYS, GRADE 8 STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR WHITE TOPS; ALL OTHER STUDENTS, PLEASE WEAR BLUE TOPS.

 Students renew their anti-bullying pledges.

 

 Throughout the week of April 1 - 5, students renewed their anti-bullying pledges by reciting the Power of One oath.

They then signed the poster and created some anti-bullying media for display through the school. This ensures that our anti-bullying strategies continue to be implemented throughout the school year.
