Toronto Catholic District School Board

St. Vincent de Paul Extended French Program

Grades 5-8

Parent Information Night

Our  Parent Information Night for the Extended French program  will be held on Thursday February 1, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. All parents are welcome to attend!

Extended French Program

At St. Vincent de Paul, our students have the privilege of participating in the Extended French Program if they so choose from Grades 5 - 8. Not every school in the TCDSB has an Extended French Program!

In Extended French, students are taught in French for half the day and in English for the other half. The Extended French program offers a strong bilingual foundation for our students which may lead the way to bilingual job opportunities, culturally rich experiences, as well as developing strong independent study habits.

 Subjects taught in French:

  • French Language Arts

  • Social studies (Grades 5 and 6)

  • History and Geography (Grades 7 and 8)

  • Visual arts
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Physical Education & Health

Subjects taught in English:

  • English Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Vocal Music (Grade 5 and 6)
  • Instrumental Music (Grades 7 and 8)
  • Religious Education/Family Life

For students entering Grade 5 Extended French, it is strongly recommended that students have access to the following two books in class and at home:

  • A French-English dictionary (Larousse, Harraps or Robert Collins).  The mini dictionaries are not helpful
  • A book of French verbs - L'Art de Conjuguer by Bescherelle

This is a friendly reminder that the TCDSB has registered for Voilà Learning's Online Homework Help in French and the service is open to all of our French immersion students, free of charge! Live tutors are available online every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evening between 4 and 8 pm to help your students work on homework, reading comprehension or oral communication in French.

Many of your students are already benefitting from the program, but many more don't know about it yet! Please help us make sure that parents and students are aware of this great service you have made available to them. Here is what you can do:

·  Newsletters: include the information provided above, the link to our webpage and Voilà's logo (attached) in your newsletter to parents
·  School website: post the Online Homework Help in French video and the link to our webpage on your school website
Thank you for your continued support, and with your help more students will have access to this great service.
