Toronto Catholic District School Board

Pupil Accommodation Review

Office of the Director of Education

May 31, 2017
Dear Member of Prince of Peace, St. Rene Goupil and The Divine Infant School Communities:

Representatives of your school communities have been involved in a Pupil Accommodation Review process implemented by the Board in May of 2016.  This letter is to inform you that the Pupil Accommodation Review process involving these three school communities has been suspended until October 2017.

A public meeting was held in October 2016.  Since that time several meetings of the committee members have occurred.  There has been much discussion around the recommended closure of The Divine Infant and St. Rene Goupil into an expanded Prince of Peace school.  Members have done an excellent job of advocating for their schools while gathering information to support the process.

Recently the Toronto Catholic District School Board announced that registration has opened for its first Multi-Language elementary school.  Through an evaluation of potential sites, this unique school program is being located at St. René Goupil, and is modelled on the familiar French Immersion program featuring instruction in French and English, with reinforcement of the curriculum expectations in Spanish and Mandarin. The Board has implemented the student online application (SOAR) for the Multi-Language school which is open to families living anywhere in the City of Toronto who meet the elementary school admission requirements for the TCDSB.

A decision has been made to suspend the Pupil Accommodation Review process until the fall in order to allow the Board sufficient time to assess the viability and long-term impact of this new program.  The committee will be reconvened at that time for further discussion regarding the Accommodation Review and the progress of the new program offering at St. Rene Goupil.

Prince of Peace, St. Rene Goupil and The Divine Infant schools will remain in full operation for the 2017-18 school year.  We thank the many parents, community members, students, and staff representatives who have participated in the accommodation review discussions thus far. Your dedication and commitment to Catholic education in the City of Toronto is appreciated. We look forward to your continued involvement as we work together to nurture the development of these school communities in order to better meet the needs of students and families in the future.
