History & Tradition

Throughout the 1980s the Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board) considered establishing a school for the Performing Arts. It was felt that all students with clearly identified talents in the arts regardless of their socio-economic status, race or cultural background, should have the opportunity to develop those talents within the TCDSB system. Therefore with the commitment and interest of parents and students, the first set of auditions were held in January 1990. Five hundred applications were processed for 250 positions and Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts opened its doors to Grade 7,8 and 9 students in September 1990. The school was named after Gerald Emmet Cardinal Carter, Ordinary of the Archdiocese of Toronto since 1979, a strong supporter of education and a distinguished patron of the arts. CCAA is a Catholic school community built upon Gospel values and the love of learning. Students, with the help of staff and parents, receive a balanced and thorough education in the arts, and through the arts. We are a unique school with unique needs and concerns, not a typical elementary or secondary school but a hybrid of both, serving students from Grade 7 to 12.

The specialized arts program allows students to concentrate in one of the four art areas: Dance (ballet and modern), Dramatic Arts, Music (strings, band and vocal) and Visual Arts.  Secondary school students complete a four-year program and receive a certificate recognizing their achievement in the arts along with the regular graduation diploma.  Students who take specific qualifying courses may also earn a school certificate in Cyber arts. Students are also encouraged to partake in a variety of co-instructional programs which include selected academic activities, clubs and athletics.

The staff, parents and students had to work from a vacuum to create new beginnings and traditions. Over the years, our school community has worked together to develop and implement new courses of study, an enriched arts program, and a variety of performance venues that address the high profile expectations of the students, parents and the community.

We are just beginning to create and develop the history of a wonderful, relevant, educational community. With the progress made over the years and with the continued enthusiasm and dedication of all, CCAA will not only continue to be an arts school, but a school that embodies the spirit of our motto: “Arts for the Glory of God”.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Strategies used to ensure...

A Catholic Environment

As a school rooted in Gospel values we establish a Catholic environment via community, liturgy and curriculum.

Community
Our chaplaincy team provides pastoral care and counseling for the whole Cardinal Carter community with the goal of establishing and maintaining an environment that is Christian, caring and nurturing. Students are encouraged to be aware of and become active in social justice issues and the community outside of the school through food drives, fundraising for charities, fasts, multicultural assemblies, community services and volunteer work.

Liturgy
Our students and staff are given the opportunity to further develop a sense of community when we come together in faith to pray, reflect on the Gospel and celebrate in our many liturgical and paraliturgical events such as masses, confirmation, retreats, prayer services and assemblies.

Curriculum
All students are expected to participate in the religious studies program from Grades 7 through 12.   In addition we infuse Gospel values into all areas of the curriculum so that students will gain a Catholic and counter-cultural perspective on the issues that confront them today.

A safe and welcoming environment

Cardinal Carter Academy--as an example of a Christian community based on the premise that life should be guided by faith and lived according to Gospel values--believes that each person has great dignity and is deserving both of the highest respect and the opportunity to work and learn in a safe and orderly environment. A sense of belonging and a “family atmosphere” is fostered at Cardinal Carter by the relative smallness of the school and by the inclusion of Grades 7 and 8. Noting that “discipline shares the same Latin root as “disciple” (instruct and/or lead), a “safe and welcoming environment” is established by both precept and example. The student code of behaviour and TCDSB policy, in compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Ministry of Education policies clearly outline what is expected of the school community with regard to behaviour and language in school or while attending school sponsored functions. Further, pursuant to Ministry policy, the school has implemented across the curriculum the principles, practices and outcomes of antiracist and ethno-cultural equity education in order to better reflect the diversity of Canadian society.

Curriculum initiatives

In this area the diversified needs of our students are met by:

  • Developing student artistic talent to the fullest and integrating this talent across the curriculum
  • Program modification and resource support for identified exceptional students
  • The use of a wide variety of teaching methods
  • Provision of a peer helper program
  • The provision of a guidance program for personal and career counseling.
  • A co-curricular program which includes athletics and opportunities to participate in other arts areas via musicals and other school productions.
  • Upgrading our computer network and equipment to allow students to become compute literate.

Students Perform at Carnegie Hall
The Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts Chamber Strings were initially invited to participate in the Field Studies International Music Festival held in Carnegie Hall after scoring a 98 in at the Heritage Music festival in Chicago in 2009. Heritage Festivals are held throughout the US and Canada. We were unable to attend the festival in 2010 so deferred to 2011. In order to be accepted in 2011, we needed to submit an audition CD in order to prove that we had maintained our performance standard. We were accepted.

Leading up to the Carnegie Hall performance, the Carter Chamber Strings won the open class of the Kiwanis music festival with a score of 94 and which also won them an invitation to the Toronto Kiwanis Finals where the string orchestra won the best group of the festival competition. These wins amounted to cash winnings of $4,000.00 which was put toward the cost to the trip to New York.

The experience of playing in Carnegie Hall was incredible for the students. The sound, standing on that stage, is almost indescribable as an artist. After we played the first chords of our first piece and I almost turned around to tell the audience and adjudicators that we would do it again because I knew never in my life time would I hear that again – hopefully one of the Carter grad’s will get that opportunity!

When we were done, the organizers took me to see the adjudicators - Dr. Frank Battisti, conductor emeritus at the New England Conservatory, Dr.Craig Kirchhoff, professor of conducting and coordinator of the graduate program and the University of Minnesota, Prof. Robert Reynolds from the Thornton School of Music USC and Charles Peltz director of ensembles at The New England Conservatory. Charles also guest conducted the Buffalo Symphony and worked extensively with the Buffalo Youth Orchestra.

Some really moving and powerful moments - musically, intellectually and emotionally for all involved.

Cardinal Carter Students Stand out at Science Olympics
Three teachers, Ms. Blais, Ms. Schumacher and Ms. Yantha accompanied 46 Carter students to the London District Science Olympics held at the University of Western Ontario on May 26. The 46 Carter students competed in 12 different events in the areas of biology, chemistry and physics.

Carter won:

a) third place in the "Displacement Dragster" event (essentially propelling a home-made balloon car);
b) second place in the "Math Biathlon" event (a test of mental math skills);
c) second place in the "Fermi Questions" event (more math skills);
d) first place in the "Taxonomy" event (this was developed and run by Michelle Blais and involves spelling knowledge of genus and species for organisms in the animal kingdom) and,
e) first place in the "Mystery Solutions" event (identification of compounds through chemical testing).

TCDSB Awards Night

Anjelika Reznik and Victoria Reznik were recognized at the annual TCDSB Awards Night on May 4. Anjelika and Victoria were one half of the Canadian contingent who won a bronze medal in Hoop and Ribbon and a bronze medal in Overall at the Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore August 14 to 26, 2010.  They earned the Youth Olympics spot by winning a gold medal in the all-around category at the Pan Am Games in Havana, Cuba the previous year.
