St. Barbara Catholic School is a school community of God's people bound together by a faith in Jesus Christ. Our mission is to educate all our students in the fullness of God's grace through the celebration of His sacraments. Through the prayers and active participation of our students, teachers, and parents, we carry out this mission with a spirit of determination and joy.
Catholic Environment and Community
We foster a welcoming, faith-filled environment where Catholic symbols, daily prayer, and liturgies are central to school life. Regular visits from the priest of St. Rose of Lima Parish support students’ spiritual growth, while new students and families are warmly welcomed into our community.
Student Safety and Well-Being
Student safety and well-being are supported through our Safe Arrival Program, staff supervision, Code of Behaviour, and school dress code. We promote respect, responsibility, and positive relationships throughout the school community.
Learning and Student Support
We integrate technology into the curriculum to enhance learning and provide ongoing professional learning for staff. Our commitment to meeting diverse learning needs includes differentiated instruction, accommodations and modifications, enrichment opportunities, and ESL services for multilingual learners. The School-Based Support Team works with teachers and families to support students’ academic, social, and emotional development, coordinating interventions, assessments, and programming when additional support is needed.
Peace and Pro Awards
By highlighting a virtue each month, (such as hospitality, forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, justice, etc.) our students are reminded of our Catholic teachings. Two students per grade (Grade 1 to 6) are awarded each month with a Pro or Peace Award based on their implementations of the virtue of the month.
Our School History and Tradition
Opened in 1959 and expanded in 1964, our school welcomed 132 students in its first year under principal Joe Legault. Enrolment grew to 613 students by 1969 before gradually declining to 458 in 1995 and 340 in 2010. Our motto, “Growing together in faith,” reflects our commitment to supporting students in both faith and learning.
Named after St. Barbara, the patron saint of architects, builders, and masons, our school honours a virgin and martyr traditionally associated with protection from storms and sudden death. Her feast day is celebrated on December 4.
Our Catholic mission is to let Christ’s light shine in all that we do. Through liturgies, prayer services, charitable initiatives such as our Giving Tree, and service to others, we strive to build a welcoming and inclusive community rooted in compassion, forgiveness, and the Gospel. We are also committed to academic excellence, encouraging students to see challenges as opportunities for growth while developing the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
