Staff, families, and community members from the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) gathered on June 22, 2026, at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg for the annual Roots of Empathy Year-End Celebration.
The event recognized the achievements of staff, school communities, and families who participated in the internationally acclaimed Roots of Empathy program, which promotes empathy, emotional literacy, and inclusion within school communities. Throughout the school year, students across TCDSB schools engaged in meaningful learning experiences designed to deepen their understanding of emotions, strengthen positive relationships, and foster compassion for others.
The celebration brought together representatives from school communities across Ontario to reflect on the program’s positive impact and recognize the dedication of educators who have played a vital role in its success throughout the province.
At TCDSB, the continued success of the program is due in large part to the commitment and leadership of several long-serving staff members whose efforts have helped shape and sustain Roots of Empathy initiatives in schools over many years.
These staff members who received certificates of recognition for their years of service to this program are:
Anne Martin, Principal, St. Lawrence Catholic School
Jean Donahue, Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE), St. Richard Catholic School
Paola Ritacca, Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE), Regina Mundi Catholic School
The dedication of these staff members, along with many others across the Board, has been instrumental in nurturing empathy, fostering inclusive learning environments, and positively impacting countless students and school communities.
The Roots of Empathy program continues to support TCDSB’s mission of creating caring, respectful, and emotionally supportive school environments. Through the program, students develop the social and emotional skills needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
As the school year draws to a close, the celebration served as a powerful reminder of the role empathy plays in building stronger, more connected communities. It also highlighted the lasting contributions of educators and volunteers who inspire kindness, understanding, and meaningful connections every day.
