About Us
James Culnan Catholic School is a safe, caring, and welcoming community. We are committed to enriching Catholic spirituality and faith development and respecting each individual.
Student Support and Learning
We meet the diverse learning needs of our students and nurture their academic potential and love of learning. Our School Learning and Improvement Team ensures that every student in both English and French Immersion programs receives support and challenge.
Focus on Literacy and Achievement
Staff work throughout the year to improve student achievement, especially in literacy. Teachers collaborate within divisions and meet regularly to refine strategies and assessments.
Family and Faith Partnerships
Our active Catholic School Parent Council supports students academically, socially, and spiritually. We build strong relationships between home, school, and parish to strengthen our Catholic community.
Students benefit from Christian role models who help nurture their spiritual growth. We maintain a safe and welcoming environment through our safe arrival program and updated discipline policies.

Our History
James Culnan Catholic School opened in September 1970. The formal blessing took place on June 6, 1971. Originally a senior school, it expanded to serve students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 in response to community demand.
Our Namesake
The school is named after James Culnan, a dedicated trustee of the Metropolitan Separate School Board, now the Toronto Catholic District School Board. His legacy includes:
37 years of service, including two terms as Board Chairman.
No salary or honorarium received.
Knighted by the Pope in 1957 for his contributions to Catholic education.
Advocated for acquiring land for Catholic schools and used his skills to purchase farmland affordably.
Mr. Culnan passed away on April 8, 1964, while still serving as a trustee. On June 11, 1995, the school celebrated its 25th anniversary with a mass at St. James Church, followed by a reception and open house attended by his family and over 700 guests.
