School History

St. Dorothy Catholic School opened in September 1969 with 244 students and was named after St. Dorothy of Caesarea. It was established to serve the growing population in the Albion Road/Martingrove Road area of Rexdale and to ease overcrowding at nearby St. Benedict and St. Andrew Catholic Schools.

Parish and Growth

The school is one of seven served by St. Andrew’s Parish, including two secondary schools. As the community grew, so did the school. In 1982, with support from the Parent Teacher Association, an addition was built to accommodate over 900 students.

In September 1993, Holy Child Catholic School was created to serve students west of Highway 27 and temporarily operated out of St. Dorothy’s building. This led to a decrease in enrolment at St. Dorothy, which then served 465 students living east of Highway 27. Holy Child moved to its own facility during the 1995–1996 school year.
