The race for the Campion Cup is officially underway at St. Edmund Campion Catholic School! Each year, Grade 8 students take the lead in organizing the school’s house program, beginning with choosing team names, creating posters and developing cheers. This year’s teams include Campion Phoenix, Bluelock, Rainbooms, Goofy Gooberz and Shadow Boltz. Using an online randomizer, students from the rest of the school are assigned to the 11 teams for the year.
The opening-day celebration sees Grade 8 students teach their teammates their team cheer before the entire school gathers to watch each team perform. Special guest judges award first-, second- and third-place finishes, kicking off a year filled with events, competitions and activities. Throughout the year, students across different divisions can participate in recess games and other challenges to earn points for their teams. While performance earns points, participation is at the heart of the program.
Launched in 2017 as a way to bring the school community closer together, the Campion Cup brings students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 onto shared teams, fostering a sense of belonging, collaboration and school spirit. Over the years, the program has become a much-loved tradition, with each new group of Grade 8 students eager for the opportunity to become Campion Cup team captains. Younger students are equally enthusiastic, often asking in September, “When are we starting Campion Cup?”
One of the program’s greatest successes is the connection it creates between younger and older students. Through their shared teams, students get to know one another across grade levels, and it is not uncommon to hear a younger student excitedly call out in the hallway, “Hey, there’s my Campion Cup leader!”
What began as a small idea has grown into an annual tradition that unites the entire school community. From Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, every student has a team and a place to belong. The Campion Cup is more than a competition; it is one of the many things that makes St. Edmund Campion Catholic School such a special place.
