School History and Tradition
St. Gabriel Catholic School first opened its doors in 1953, welcoming 210 students into six classrooms and shared facilities. As the North York community expanded, so did the school. Additions were made in 1956, 1963, and 1966 to accommodate the growing student population.
Over time, as enrollment fluctuated, the original section of the building was temporarily used by the North York administrative offices of the school board. In 1986, a daycare facility was added to support local families.
By 1993, enrollment had grown to 490 students, prompting the school to reclaim its original space. On May 3, 1995, the school community celebrated a re-blessing ceremony, joyfully welcoming back Mother St. Albert, the school’s first principal.
Our Patron Saint
Our school is named after St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin, a Passionist priest who dedicated his life to faith and service. Born in the 19th century, he died in 1862 at the age of 24. He was beatified in 1903 and canonized in 1920. His feast day is celebrated on February 27.
