On Thursday, June 5, the energy was electric at St. Maria Goretti Catholic School as the Toronto Catholic District School Board hosted its first-ever competitive elementary school Open Styles Dance Battle—a groundbreaking event celebrating student creativity, collaboration, and the arts.
The event was made possible through the vision and support of the TCDSB Arts Department, in partnership with the dynamic H4 (Hip Hop Helps Heal) Team and a dedicated group of volunteers. The initiative was led by Mr. Glen Reyes, with empowering morning leadership activities facilitated by Mr. Michael Consul.
Students from nine elementary schools brought their passion, energy, and talent to the stage, forming a total of 16 dynamic dance crews. The afternoon was filled with high-energy performances, authentic expression, and an atmosphere of school spirit and celebration.
St. Martin de Porres’ team, “Panthers in Motion,” rose to the top with a standout performance that captivated the judges and the crowd alike. Dancers Safurat O., Sofiat O., Wafeequat A., and Jahida M. delivered a powerful, polished routine that showcased their dedication, teamwork, and love for the art of dance.
“These girls are natural dancers,” said Mr. Reyes.
This milestone event highlighted the power of the arts in Catholic education and the importance of creating platforms for student voice and expression.
A heartfelt thank you to the TCDSB Arts Department for powering this vision and making space for joy, movement, and student leadership to shine.
Congratulations to Panthers in Motion and to all participating schools for making history at the TCDSB’s first-ever elementary school dance battle!
